Essential Inventory Truths
The core principle of inventory optimization is to meet targeted customer service levels with minimum inventory investment. This presentation outlines quantifiable methods to meet rising customer expectations while accounting for volatile demand and complex supply risks. Certain tenets of safety stock calculations are absolute truths, whereas others are decisions that weigh tradeoffs between methods. The presenters will point out some common pitfalls and share best practices from the experiences of Tropicana and its sibling businesses within PepsiCo Americas. They will also present practical, real-world examples of extending core inventory calculations to overall cost optimization, balancing inventory investment with operations & logistics costs.

Speakers:

Tim Rowell, CPIM
Tim is part of the Chilled Supply Chain Management (SCM) Team for PepsiCo Americas, responsible for the planning of materials and finished goods for the entire network of chilled manufacturing plants and distribution facilities for North America. The Chilled SCM Team supports the Tropicana and Naked Juice brands. Tim is currently responsible for Product Supply Management. He has held several positions within SCM during his 14 year tenure – including forecasting and management of production & distribution planning. He has lead major projects including the development of an advanced inventory planning methodology, and he has also led part of a comprehensive ERP implementation. Tim has spoken at multiple industry conferences including APICS and i2/JDA. He holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida and an MBA from Carnegie Mellon GSIA with a concentration in Production and Operations Management.

Shawn Batka, CPIM, CSCP
Shawn has more than 17 years of Supply Chain and Operations Management experience with companies in the beverage and plastic industries. He is currently Senior Manager, Supply Chain Optimization for PepsiCo Americas. Shawn has responsibility for leading end-to-end supply chain optimization initiatives and leveraging business systems to drive competitive advantage. He has been heavily involved in PepsiCo’s conversion to an integrated planning system, which includes SAP, i2, and AspenTech. Previously, Shawn spent six years at Diageo, leading the materials management and production planning functions at the company’s flagship distilling and bottling operation in North America. His plastic experience includes high-speed extrusion blow molding at Consolidated Container Company, and custom injection molding at Armin Molding. Shawn has been actively involved in APICS for over 10 years, and is the Immediate Past President of the APICS Fox River Chapter. He has an MBA from DePaul University, and a BS in Engineering Technology from Southern Illinois University.

JOHN C. DVORAK, CPA

Mr. Dvorak leads attest engagements, tax planning and various value-added consulting projects, typically for mid-size, family owned businesses including many dealership clients. He has provided such services for over 20 years and is familiar with all aspects of managing these engagements. His auditing experience includes large dealership groups throughout the USA and Australia and includes SEC registrants. His experience also includes performing acquisition due diligence on entities valued up to $1.2 billion including targets, in the United Kingdom as well as the United States, of leading public dealership companies. He has managed the investigation, identification, documentation, and evaluation of internal control systems of a public company related to its compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. He has led projects investigating alleged misappropriation of assets and fraudulent reporting. His consulting services include the identification and implementation of more profitable operating procedures, expense controls, protection of corporate assets, improvements to the effectiveness of accounting controls and efficiency of accounting procedures as well as assisting business owners with the financial analysis of investment alternatives, preparation of business plans, consummation of corporate acquisitions and divestitures, income tax planning, and performing as acting CFO.
Mr. Dvorak coordinated the Dealer Focus Series, an educational forum and workshop for Chicagoland dealership CFO’s and Controllers. He has also presented training programs regarding various accounting and management related topics to various internal and external groups.

Mr. Dvorak is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Illinois CPA Society, and is an active participant of the Board of Directors of Junior Achievement – DuPage County
